Winner Of The Contest!

July 11th, 2009 by Alison · No Comments · sustainability

We have a winner of the contest for the best new link for our Resources For Good Living page. A reader named Allison (same first name as mine, but spelled differently) receives a $50 gift certificate to Powells Books (or other non-chain store of her choice) for suggesting we add Perelandra, a site on nature intelliegence and the power of normal people to change our culture for the better.

Note: The other part of the contest remains open. So, the first person to give us six or moreĀ  good links to add to the Resources page — to sites or blogs on reducing our consumption while preserving happiness — will also be a winner, and receive a $50 gift certificate.

Here in italics is a quote from Perelandra, which is in Virginia, employs about ten people, and is founded/led by Machaelle Wright:

Our current crisis was created by each of us acting independently and establishing a personal and professional lifestyle that was environmentally deaf, dumb and blind.

The needed coordination between governments and industry to turn this crisis around will never succeed if we as individuals don’t join in the efforts. If the same number of individuals who created the problem focused on what they need to do on the personal level to live an environmentally conscious life, we could turn the global problems around in an amazingly short time.

I believe in the power of the individual and I believe in the importance of our acting responsibly as individuals without waiting for the right leader or group. In actuality, it’s the power of the individual that leads the way.

Sidenote: Perelandra sells products that it freely states have not been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. I appreciate their disclaimer, and I’ll also volunteer that I have no position on their products, and haven’t used them. I’m endorsing their general sense of mission as stated above, which makes great sense to me.
