We’re Seeking A Housemate!

July 14th, 2010 by Alison · 4 Comments · sustainability

I’ve have had so many good experiences with housemates that I’ve never understood why the practice isn’t more common among people who are post-college — even here in Portland, Oregon, where reducing your carbon footprint is a fairly normal conversation topic.

Our house is:

  • Newly built, spacious, with lots of light
  • Highly energy-efficient
  • Housemate’s bedroom is 12′ x 16.5′ with bathroom across hall
  • On a quiet street that’s walking distance from Mt. Tabor Park
  • Beautiful hardwood oak floor downstairs; bedrooms (upstairs) are carpeted
  • On TriMet frequent bus line #4
  • Ten minute bike ride to Montavilla — restaurants, Academy Theater, Farmers Market
  • Full of lyrical touches such as outdoor dining on deck, two fireplaces, front porch, etc.
  • Smoke-free, drug-free (social drinking is fine)
  • Wifi-equipped

My husband and I

  •  Love to talk, laugh and play games
  •  Have had housemates in the past and enjoyed them
  •  Compost, recycle and practice energy conservation
  •  Enjoy vegetarian cooking and dinner parties
  •  Like to read (we don’t watch television)
  •  Cannot have cats due to cat allergy (sorry)

 We’re seeking a housemate who:

  • Has successfully lived with others
  • Is stably employed
  • Might share one or more of our interests, i.e. gardening, vegetarian cooking, running, renewable energy, singing, dancing, writing, progressive politics
  • Can supply references (both employment and renting)
  • Is fairly free of drama (quirks are welcome, we’re quirky too)

Cost is $585/month plus one-third utilities.

If you’re interested and the housemate description sounds like you, please post a comment telling about yourself and your lifestyle, and please include your phone number (nobody will see your phone number but me). Thank you kindly, and best wishes on your search!

    Hello Allison,

    Hello!

I’m writing in response to your ad on Craigslist. My boyfriend and I are looking for a place to rent from about mid August through the end of November. Our move in/out dates are a little flexible. We would be happy to pay for a chunk of August rent to hold our spot. We are law students who will be working full time for three months in Portland. We are in our mid-twenties, clean, responsible, quiet but outgoing, and friendly. We like to cook, garden, read, listen to music, and enjoy life. We are both vegetarians, but we don’t expect others to be. We are low key and easy to get along with. We nonsmokers and are eco-conscious. I used to work for an environmental non-profit in Portland, so we have a small group of friends there. I will be working on environmental and land use issues while we are in Portland. Adam will be working with low-income clients seeking legal assistance. Please let us know if you think we are a good match, or if you have any more questions. We would be happy to provide references- employment and personal. We both currently live with roommates and I’ve lived with up to six roommates in an intentional community in the past.

    Thanks for your consideration!

    Deirdre

    Deirdre,
You sound delightful. We’re looking for a one-year commitment, though, so it’s not a fit.
    Good luck!

Ron, it was good talking with you on the phone last night. While we can supply a little storage space, I can see it’s not on the scale you need for the extent of your gear and equipment. I really appreciate your writing in; best wishes on your search.
