Millions are unsuccessfully looking for jobs, our climate is warming faster than the scientists’ worst-case scenarios and now we also have a swine flu epidemic. Ai-yai-yai. All of those are important, but today I’m drilling down deeper into a universal constant in all our lives: the food that keeps us alive.
Living in the city as most of us do, it’s easy to imagine that our food comes from the grocery store, and that sex is something just we humans crave. But no: food comes to us courtesy of the earth, from soil, air and water and from the other thing that makes our world go ’round: the good, old-fashioned instinct of all species to reproduce.
Planting Prayers
Come spring, she craves him
He woos her, parts her, delivers his seed
They are at it somewhere now, even as you read
She, merrily receiving; he, joyfully releasing.
The staff of life they are a-creating.
Pray, if you will! Pray without ceasing
(Above the din of their ardent lovemaking)
That the the plow will be blessed with virility
And his lover, the earth, with fertility.
