Sustaining Our Health

The things we are NOT talking about are often the biggest problems. This morning, columnist Bob Herbert of the New York Times educates us in this article on Senator McCain’s plan for national health insurance if he is elected president in November. As Mr. Herbert points out, almost nobody is writing about this or talking about it.

McCain’s plan would make the already broken health insurance situation in the United States even worse. For starters, employees would have to start paying taxes on their health benefits, which are currently untaxed. The further disastrous details are better explained by Mr. Herbert than me. Interesting that a man who endured torture as a prisoner of war would not have gained more appreciation for human well-being than his anemic health plan reflects.

The comment I am adding to the mix is: as voters, let’s put our eyes on the collective prizes here. Health is just as important as the economy, jobs, and even Wall Street’s ills, and much more important than the focus on entertainment and emotions that are dominating the presidential race at present. We need leadership, not entertainment and we specifically need leadership that cares about sustaining our physical health, including that of the millions currently without health care. Senator Obama’s health care plan would help Americans much more than McCain’s, and for that reason among many others, I am voting for Obama, and asking you to do the same.

Basically, most employees

I am so glad to see you write about this, because I read Herbert’s piece myself and am HORRIFIED in regards to McCain’s plan. It would allow insurance companies to discriminate and cherry pick, and would in no way make healthcare affordable for anyone at all. It would, in fact, have the opposite effect!

We are definitely voting Obama, and we are hoping that enough Democratic candidates will win so that should McCain eek out a victory, he will be a lame duck President!
