McCain As Maverick? Look Harder . . .

September 10th, 2008 by Alison · No Comments · lifestyle, politics

Andy Jackson was good enough to offer a comment on yesterday’s post on the presidential race. Andy writing: I am revved up by McCain/Palin for the simple fact that they are not lawyers, and they are willing to buck the system. Now if only we can toss out the entire House of Reps and get some regular folks in there, ready to commit to fixing the mess in one term and going back home.

Alison (me) writing in response:

Well . . . . President Bush has never been a lawyer either, and his leadership has led to much of the rest of the world reviling us,  and 80% of our own country believing we’re heading in the wrong direction.   With Senator McCain, here is why I’m not convinced he would be bucking the system if elected: 90% to 95% of the time during the Bush presidency, McCain backed or agreed with Bush’s decisions.

Active citizenship means looking past the surface (the words politicians are saying) to the substance (what politicians are actually doing). Obama is not aggressive enough on carbon emissions reductions to suit me or the best science available –  but neither is he sold out to oil interests in the way the McCain-Palin ticket is.

While Obama has my vote, my country needs much more from me than my showing up to vote. My vision of diamond-cut citizenship involves walking with a carbon footprint low enough to be truly sustainable in the face of global warming — and doing it with so much happiness, vitality and sociability that others want to do it, too.
