I have just a short post today letting people know about an exciting job opening in the growing general job-market of sustainability. Oregon Department of Transportation is recruiting to hire a new Sustainability Program Manager. Click on this link to see the full job description and details. As I am writing on Friday October 10, the posting says “open until filled”.
The position was devised about three years ago, and the person who gets hired will be the second person to fill the job. I’m naturally eager to see a highly qualified candidate land it. I work in transportation options, encouraging people to carpool, bike, walk, use transit and telework. Transportation is currently responsible for about 40% of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions (greenhouse gas emissions are the cause of global warming). So, the person who gets hired into this job will be in a good position to make a difference.
Here is a list of several dozen companies with some commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by their being members of The Natural Step Network. If you’re interested in getting into the (quite competitive) job market of people seeking green jobs in the Portland, Oregon area, I recommend using the services of professional career counselor Vicki Lind.
Vicki helped me navigate my way to my current job which I love. Tomorrow I’m speaking at one of her workshops for green job-seekers to lend them encouragement and advice. I see the path to sustainability as being all about economic transformation, and we need a work-force that has what we might call ‘green literacy’.
